the process of washing the anchor and chain of mud, sand, seaweed, and debris that may have been picked up from the sea bed (or river bed). The anchor wash is a high pressure stream of seawater over the anchor chain and is usually washed down the hawse pipe, the wash down may not be perfect, but it removes the bulk of the debris.
